Baby Shower & Naming

Warm, unhurried coverage of family milestones.

How we work

A seemantham and a barasala are not weddings, and photographing them like one ruins them. The rooms are smaller, the light is whatever the house has, and most of what matters happens in a few unrepeatable minutes — the mother-in-law's hands on the bangles, the grandfather saying the name aloud for the first time, an older cousin deciding this baby belongs to her now.

We work quietly and close, with one photographer for most ceremonies. No lighting rigs in a room where elders are sitting, no calling anyone back to repeat a ritual for a better angle. The ritual happens once. Our job is to be in the right place before it does, which mostly means knowing the order of events well enough to stop asking.

What we photograph

Coverage runs from the preparations to the last of the lunch. The ceremony itself is the shortest part of the day; the rest is family who have travelled, food being served, and the baby being passed around a room. That is usually where the photographs people keep come from.

Family portraits are the one part we direct, because everyone wants a copy and nobody wants to organise it. We take them early, before the baby is tired and before anyone has changed out of what they came in.

Booking

Most families book two to four weeks ahead. A barasala date is fixed by the calendar rather than by preference, so tell us as soon as you know — dates cluster, and two families often share one.

A short conversation beforehand is worth more than it sounds. Every family runs these differently, and ten minutes about who will be there and what happens in what order is the difference between covering a ceremony and following one.
